What is Minecraft Earth?
Minecraft Earth is the latest addition to the Minecraft franchise announced by Microsoft in May of 2019. The game takes a whole new approach to Minecraft, moving it into the real-world context of augmented reality. Like the Minecraft you know on other platforms, Earth can be played alone or as a multiplayer game.
It’s a big leap for Minecraft, and just one of the many announcements they’re making in conjunction with Minecraft’s 10th Anniversary. You can check out the official announcement here.
Asking yourself what augmented reality is? Don’t worry, it’s not all that mainstream, so you’re not alone. Augmented reality takes virtual items, in the case of Minecraft Earth that could be in-game items or mobs or it could be user creations, like a home, for instance, and overlays them onto the real world.
Overlays them how? Consider the mob example. It’s a good place to start. When playing Minecraft Earth, you might look at your mobile phone using its camera, and see the real world just with a mob placed inside it. That mob would move in the three-dimensional space just as a real item would look.
A Minecraft Earth Video is Worth More than a Thousand Words
The best way to get a feel for how that might look is to watch the official Minecraft Earth video below. It’s a dramatization, but you’ll get the idea.
